At just eight years old, Shay Eskew’s life changed forever. What began as a seemingly innocent attempt to help a neighbor remove a yellow jacket nest turned into a life-altering moment when he was accidentally doused in gasoline and set on fire. With 65% of his body burned, doctors initially believed he would never play sports again. Defying limits and being a role model would not be top of mind for many.
But Shay Eskew had other plans.
Breaking Barriers: The Early Years
Despite extensive injuries that required 43 surgeries, multiple skin grafts, and significant physical challenges, Shay refused to be defined by his scars. Instead of letting his burn injuries limit him, he used sports as a powerful tool for reclaiming his identity.
“I want to be known as an athlete, not as a burn survivor. I don’t want your pity. I want you to fear me when I step into the ring.”
From baseball to wrestling, Shay transformed mockery into motivation. When kids called him “Freddy Krueger,” he developed a sharp sense of humor, turning potential bullying into moments of wit and resilience. While he had some limits he was not going to be defined by them and was setting out to defy them.
The Ironman Journey: Pushing Physical Limits
Shay’s athletic journey took a dramatic turn when a 65-year-old Ironman finisher challenged him in a fitness class. What started as a humbling experience became a transformative path to endurance sports.
Remarkable Achievements:
- Competed in Ironman competitions on every continent
- Qualified for 70.3 World Championships for 12 consecutive years
- Completed the challenging 7X Human Performance Project
- Competed in a marathon in Antarctica

Family and Purpose: More Than Just Athletic Achievements
For Shay, sports are about more than personal glory. As a father of five, he uses his experiences to teach his children about perseverance, hard work, and embracing challenges.
“I want my kids to know life’s hard, life’s not fair, but it can also be extremely rewarding beyond your wildest imagination.”
The lessons he teaches his children are ones that were taught to him by his father. When Shay was young, he father decided to coach the youth baseball team and put Shay at second base. This allowed him to have the shortest throw to first base because he was forced to throw left handed.
The lessons and help didn’t end there. Due to the burns, his body is unable to regulate sweat and can also cause issues with bleeding. Shay wanted to play football and not be considered different from the other kids. That led his father to alter the shoulder pads and allow Shay to take the field as a ‘normal’ child.
It is with this as background that Shay is able to teach his own children about going the next step and defying limits.
Inspirational Lessons: Beyond the Finish Line
Shay’s philosophy extends far beyond athletic achievements. He believes in manufacturing hardships, encouraging his children to push beyond their comfort zones, and understanding that hard work will beat natural talent if natural talent doesn’t work.
Being in situations that are not unicorns and rainbows allows us to grow and learn. By encouraging his children to go beyond their comfort zones, he is extending their ability to be comfortable. The thought process of: if this is hard today, it will not be hard tomorrow allows us to grow because we made it through the hardest of times.
As the cliche goes: Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
A Message of Hope
Shay’s story gives us an example of the incredible capacity to overcome. From a burn survivor told he’d never play sports to a multi-continent marathon runner and Ironman athlete, he embodies the true essence of endurance.
“When you look at things I’ve done in life, what I want to be known for is being a father of five, happily married. The accolades you achieve in sports are great, but that’s not why I do them.”
There are plenty of opportunities for us to give up and give in. Life will get hard. Life will give us off ramps. Some days those off ramps are needed, but only temporarily. If you are looking to defy the limits that are placed in front of you, there needs to be a commitment to the why. Why did you get started and why are you still going? Why is it important to you?
Answering the why question will put us back on track and moving forward. Shay has answered that question since he was a young boy. Now, he is taking the answers he gave himself and sharing them with others. He is providing inspiration and motivation for each of us to chase our dreams and defy our limits.
