Stories of personal transformation are as powerful as any finish line victory. In endurance sports, these stories are all around us. Stories of athletes overcoming alcohol and drug abuse to recovering from a pregnancy and beyond. Pilvi Alopaeus’s running journey is about how she was rediscover her strength through running. This discovery is having an impact on her as is coming to realize that nothing seems impossible.

Overcoming Life’s Challenges

Pilvi’s story begins not with athletic prowess, but with significant personal challenges. A survivor of assault and personal tragedy, she found herself spiraling into a depression that seemed to strip away her sense of self. As a former semi-professional horseback rider and attorney, Pilvi had always been driven, but something fundamental was missing.

“I felt like I had lost control of myself,” Pilvi recalls. “I was succeeding on the outside, but inside, I felt completely disconnected.”

The First Step: Reclaiming Control

Her turning point came unexpectedly while working in the Middle East. Facing a serious health scare and feeling lost, Pilvi made a decision that would change everything. She walked into a hotel gym and committed to just 10 minutes of walking and 5 minutes of running.

That 15 minutes of movement may not seem like much but it was her first step in rediscovering her strength. When runners think of 15 minutes they may pass but thankfully Pilvi did not. 15 minutes is now equivalent to a lifetime of smiles from this point forward.

“It was the first thing I was doing purely for myself in decades,” she says. “I was shocked when I could run 20 minutes within a week.”

Building a New Relationship with Running

What started as a small experiment quickly became a transformative journey. Pilvi discovered that running was more than just physical exercise – it was a way to reconnect with herself. She found inspiration in the running community, appreciating their honesty and supportive nature.

“Running forces you to face yourself,” Pilvi explains. “There’s nothing else but your own thoughts when you’re out there.”

Breaking Down Mental Barriers

One of the most significant challenges Pilvi overcame was the narrative she had constructed about herself. She had convinced herself that she was too old, too out of shape, and incapable of becoming an athlete again. Comparison with others is one struggle but when you begin to compare yourself to yourself there may be even bigger obstacles. How do you overcome that comparison game so that you can rediscover the strength you do have? Just get started….easy to say, hard to do.

“The hardest thing wasn’t starting to run,” she reflects, “it was admitting that I had been lying to myself for years about what I could accomplish.”

A Holistic Transformation

Running became a catalyst for broader life changes. Pilvi began to pay attention to her nutrition, incorporate strength training, and prioritize recovery. The physical transformation was remarkable – she lost over 40 kilograms in a year – but the mental transformation was even more significant.

Looking Ahead: Marathon Dreams

With her first marathon on the horizon, Pilvi’s goals extend beyond personal achievement. She dreams of participating in the World Marathon Majors, not as a competitive elite runner, but as someone who embodies the spirit of everyday athletes.

“It’s about being part of a community,” she says. “Showing that these ‘superhuman’ achievements are possible for anyone willing to put in the work.”

Advice for Aspiring Runners

Pilvi’s most powerful advice is simple yet profound: “Remember the feeling after you finish. Appreciate yourself for showing up, whether it’s five minutes or fifty kilometers. You did that – no one else.”

Pilvi Alopaeus’s journey reminds us that running is about so much more than miles and pace. It’s about how you can rediscover strength and  reinvent ourselves, all done through running.
