Trail Running Meets Food Fights | Food Fight Friday at the Aid Station Run Tri Bike

Ultra trail running is about endurance, grit, and, sometimes, the bizarre food choices at aid stations. But what if aid station fueling became a game? Food Fight Friday at the Aid Station presented by 7 Summits Snacks takes a lighthearted approach to trail running nutrition, where hosts Jason Bahamundi and Adam Lee challenge guests to play Eat, Toss, or Carry.

In this episode, special guest Santino Williams faces three handheld meat pies, each with a unique twist. His mission? Decide which to eat immediately, which to toss aside, and which to carry to the next aid station.

The Meat Pie Showdown

This round of Eat, Toss, or Carry featured these three ultra-friendly (or maybe not-so-friendly) meat pies:

🥟 Cuban Empanada + Cafecito – A Latin American classic, packed with flavor and paired with a caffeine jolt.
🥩 Jamaican Beef Patty + Red Stripe Beer – A spicy, hearty choice with a refreshing twist.
🍞 Russian Piroshki + Vodka Shot – A bold, carb-heavy option with a strong kick.

Santino’s Strategy: Fueling or Failing?

Santino had some tough calls to make:
Eat the empanada – The perfect energy boost with a strong shot of cafecito to keep his legs moving.
Carry the beef patty & beer – A more filling option that could come in handy later in the race.
🚫 Toss the piroshki & vodka – A risky combo that could spell trouble for his stomach.

Jason & Adam’s Race-Day Tactics

The hosts joined in on the fun, offering their own takes:
🔹 Jason opted to keep the beef patty for extra fuel (or wildlife protection, just in case).
🔹 Adam leaned toward the empanada as a strong pre-race snack, leaving the vodka behind—because mid-race shots might not be the best idea!

Post-Race Cravings: More Food, Please!

Once the miles are done, Santino’s go-to treat is coffee and donuts—especially if chocolate is involved. Because let’s be honest, after an ultra, we’ve all earned that indulgence.

Trail Running is About More Than Just Miles

At the end of the day, ultra running is about community, adventure, and having fun along the way. Whether it’s tackling aid station food dilemmas or swapping race-day stories, the miles are always better with a few laughs.
