From 15 Seconds to Six Stars | Fireside Chat Guest: Mary Fleming

Mary Fleming's Endurance Journey to Six Star Medal Run Tri Bike

Mary Fleming’s journey into the world of endurance sports didn’t start with a race bib or a finish line—it started with a walk. In 2013, following a doctor’s advice to help manage her anxiety, Mary took her first steps. At the time, running for even 15 seconds felt impossible. Fast forward to today, and she has earned one of the sport’s highest honors: the Six Star Medal, awarded to athletes who complete all six World Marathon Majors.

Mary’s story is more than one of physical achievement. It’s about mental resilience, growth, and discovering joy through movement. Her running journey shows how small, consistent efforts can transform your life.

Coaching, Community, and Representation

Mary emphasizes the value of coaching—not just for pace and power, but for confidence and mental well-being. Her coaches provide real-time support, helping her stay accountable while processing moments of doubt. She also acknowledges the pressure that can come with feeling like you must perform, especially when you’re deeply connected to your coach’s investment in your success.

Representation plays a major role in Mary’s story. Early on, she found motivation and belonging through organizations like Black Girls Run and Black Unicorns in Boston. Seeing other Black women in endurance sports validated her own presence and reminded her that she deserved to take up space in this world.

Starting Over in Multisport

Now, Mary is tackling an entirely new challenge: multisport. With plans to complete a duathlon and ultimately an Ironman 70.3, she’s learning to swim and ride a bike with the same determination that got her through marathons. And she’s not afraid to laugh at herself along the way—especially when sharing stories about figuring out gear shifting or mastering pool drills.

Her willingness to be a beginner again is a refreshing reminder that growth never stops, and neither does the fun. Whether you’re on your first run or training for your tenth race, staying curious and keeping perspective is key.

Strength, Health, and Showing Up

In addition to endurance training, Mary incorporates strength workouts into her routine. These sessions help her build resilience, recover from injury, and stay ready for whatever challenge comes next. She uses her social media presence to advocate for fitness within the Black community through the hashtag #BlackGirlsWorkoutToo—encouraging others to claim their space in gyms and on trails.

Mary’s message is clear: taking care of your whole self matters. Mental health, physical strength, and emotional well-being are all parts of the athlete’s journey.

Motherhood, Coaching, and Time Management

Outside of racing, Mary wears many hats—mom, educator, and coach. Her approach to time management is rooted in passion and purpose. She makes room for what matters, and she’s honest about the balancing act.

In a fun rapid-fire segment, Mary shares her favorite snacks, the music that powers her workouts, and how she finds downtime in a busy life. The energy she brings to the conversation is equal parts real, joyful, and inspiring.

A Story Worth Starting

Mary Fleming’s endurance journey is a call to action for anyone waiting to take their first step. Whether you’re running to manage your mental health, to challenge yourself physically, or just to have fun, Mary reminds us that it’s not about perfection—it’s about progression.

Follow her journey and remember: endurance sports aren’t just about finish lines. They’re about finding the courage to begin.
