Sacha Moreno grew up surrounded by sports. Her dad was a dedicated triathlete when she was younger, and her brother still competes as a pro. But Sacha wasn’t really into triathlons at first. “I was never fully into the triathlon scene,” Sacha says. “I didn’t like running. I was kind of okay with the bike, but I was always a swimmer. That’s my main sport.” Then, the spark came to go from swim to triathlon.

What if

Sacha was on swim teams her whole life. She loved being in the water and got really good at it. But as she got older, she started thinking about those few triathlons she did when she was younger. Seeing her brother still racing made her wonder – what if she gave it another shot?

Around that time, Sacha started a new job as a lifeguard and swim instructor. She wanted to make friends with her new coworkers, Stephanie and Mia Ramos. That’s when she had an idea. “What if we did a race together?” Sacha remembers. “And they said that’s funny. We don’t do that. And I said, “What if?”

She Tris

Somehow, Sacha managed to talk Stephanie and Mia into training for a triathlon with her. After completing their first sprint triathlon together, they picked an all-women’s triathlon from race organization She Tris Triathlon. “We liked the idea of She Tris being an all women’s event,” Sacha explains. “The distance seemed very fair. It wasn’t too difficult, considering we were starting.” Training wasn’t always easy. Sacha was great at swimming, but running and biking were tough. Still, having Stephanie and Mia to train with made a huge difference.

Doing it In a Group

“Doing things alone isn’t as fun as doing it in a group, and everyone holds each other accountable,” Sacha says. “The days I don’t feel like getting on the trainer, Stephanie would tell me I have to. So now we have to do it together.” The three women all had different strengths. Sacha helped the others with swimming. Mia was good at running and pushed Sacha to get faster. Stephanie was best on the bike and kept everyone motivated.

3 Miles Without Stopping

Race day finally came, and it was better than Sacha could have imagined. “It felt very fulfilling,” she says. “I never ran 3 miles without stopping. That was the first race I ran without stopping.” Not only did Sacha finish, but she also placed in her age group. So did Stephanie and Mia. They had achieved everything they set out to do.

A New Passion

“We all dropped the time we wanted to drop. We all enjoyed the event. We all met people,” Sacha remembers happily. That first race sparked something in Sacha. She’s done more triathlons since then, but still looks back on that day fondly. It was the start of a new passion – and a new friend group. Sacha, Stephanie and Mia now call themselves the Tri Girls.

More Than Just Racing

For Sacha, triathlon has become about more than just racing. It’s about pushing herself, spending time with friends, and being part of a supportive community. “I think whenever you have a group of people doing the same thing as you, it just makes everything more fun,” she says. “And then you all can kind of push each other to achieve the goals you want to achieve, even if they’re all slightly different goals.”

From the little girl who only wanted to swim, to the woman conquering all three triathlon disciplines, Sacha has come a long way. And with the Tri Girls by her side, she’s excited to see how much farther she can go. Sacha’s journey from swim to triathlon is a testament to seeking continuous growth.
