It all started as a joke, really. Sacha, Stephanie, and Mia were just three friends who liked to train together for triathlons. They didn’t set out to create anything big or special. As Stephanie puts it with a smile, “I don’t want to say that everything that we do kind of starts as a joke, but everything that we do kind of starts as a joke.” Little did they know this joke would evolve into a story of friendship, support, and triathlon.
We’re The Tri Girls
The name “Tri Girls” came about naturally. Sacha explains, “We weren’t trying to be serious at the time. It was just very for us to be like, oh, we’re the Tri Girls.” They wanted something to call their little group, separate from the swim team and tri club that Sacha’s brother coached.
A Simple Logo
But sometimes, small jokes turn into something more. Stephanie made a simple logo for their group chat. Then she thought, “Oh, how cute would it be if I got stickers to put on our water bottles and stuff if we wanted to?” Soon, there were keychains, and then an Instagram account to share their training.
Matching Bright Suits
The Tri Girls really started to feel real when Sacha’s dad got involved. He saw potential in their little group before they did. Sacha remembers, “He said I can make a Tri Girls suit for you guys.” Excited by the idea, Sacha asked if she could design it herself. “Can I? If I drew something, would they be able to make it?” Her dad agreed, and soon the girls had matching bright suits with their logo.

A Proud MomentÂ
Wearing these suits to races made them stand out. Sacha recalls, “At a race we went to, everyone had eyes on us because we had very bright matching suits, and everyone kept complimenting, oh, like, where’s that from?” It was a proud moment for Sacha to say she designed them herself.
What the Group Could Mean
As the Tri Girls grew, so did their vision for what the group could mean. For Sacha, it became about more than just the three of them. She says, “For me, it represents people that feel like they achieve a goal, and together they can.” She hopes that one day, there could be more Tri Girls, supporting each other and taking on new challenges.
Having Fun
Stephanie agrees, adding her own perspective: “For me, Tri Girls are really about… even if you’re not the best at it, you can still do it.” It’s not about being the fastest or the strongest, but about trying your best and having fun.
Support Each Other
Mia echoes this sentiment, saying, “We really just started it to support each other, and now it’s become more of a thing to support a lot of other girls and women in triathlons.” She wants people to know that “even if you’re not very good, even if your times are really slow compared to what the standard might be for triathlons, you can still have fun with it, and people are still going to support you.”
Hard Work More Enjoyable
The Tri Girls have found that training together makes the hard work more enjoyable. As Mia puts it, “Training, no matter what, is gonna be hard, but it’s not gonna be any harder for you than it is gonna be for the next person.” Having friends by your side makes all the difference.
Encouraging Others
For these three friends, being Tri Girls is about more than just competing in triathlons. It’s about supporting each other through challenges, celebrating small victories, and encouraging others to join in. Sacha sums it up beautifully: “When I feel like I can’t do something, I know they’re there to tell me, yes, you can.”
What Started As a Joke
What started as a joke has become a source of strength, friendship, and inspiration. The Tri Girls show that with the right support and attitude, anyone can take on a challenge and have fun doing it. Their matching suits and logo might catch people’s eyes, but it’s their spirit of encouragement and perseverance that truly makes the Tri Girls special. At the core of it all, this was truly a story of friendship.
