I sat down with the founder of Fast Chix Triathlon Club, Yvonne Spencer, on the latest episode of Melanin MVP. Yvonne, a military veteran, shared the compelling story behind the club’s inception. What began as a small group of determined women has blossomed into a thriving community of triathletes, breaking barriers and setting new standards in the sport. Fast Chix’s mission is to make triathlon more accessible and welcoming to all women, regardless of their athletic background or experience level.
The Economic Power of Everyday Athletes
A significant portion of our discussion focused on the economic influence of everyday athletes. Spencer highlighted how recreational athletes contribute substantially to the sports industry through equipment purchases, event participation, and training programs.
I had some friends that were in the triathlon community, but it was a little different when I went to different pools to go training or I was out there cycling. I just looked around and I wanted to see more of me. I wanted people that look like me to have that experience because triathlon has done a lot for me.
I was really curious how she helps prepare women for the swimming portion of triathlons. I’ve always wondered how Black swimmers address hair care. She provided some practical solutions for hair care concerns and discussed how Fast Chix has developed innovative approaches to help members overcome their fears and technical challenges in the water.

I couldn’t let the conversation end without getting Yvonne to spill the tea on Fast Chix’s 2025 event calendar. Listen to the show wherever you get your podcasts and be sure to leave us a review!
