Blueseventy Flow Goggles: A Game Changer for Triathletes

Blueseventy Flow goggles review Run Tri Bike

A few weeks ago I received a couple of pairs of blueseventy goggles to test out as I ramp up my training for Indian Wells 70.3, which I’ve been chronicling in our Enjoying The Journey series. The first pair that I tested and will be reviewing are the blueseventy flow goggles. This particular pair is red with blue mirrored lenses. They also sell them in a variety of lens options including silver mirror, yellow, clear and smoke.

My Triathlon Journey: From Sprint to Ironman

I raced my first triathlon in 2009. That sprint triathlon led to 8 Ironman finishes and a love for swimming. When I first started triathlon training, swimming was the hardest of the three sports because it felt unnatural. Beyond that feeling there seemed to be a lot of gear. There were the swim caps, jammers, pull buoy, fins, paddles….oh my! The one piece of gear that was necessary was goggles. Swimming with uncomfortable or leaky goggles would make swimming impossible and unenjoyable.

Over the years, swimming has become a go to for improving fitness but also for recovering from long rides and runs. All that time in the water means that having good goggles becomes imperative.

First Impressions: Testing the Blueseventy Flow Goggles

For years, I have worn the TYR Nest goggles. The blueseventy Flow goggles will be the first different pair I’ve used for triathlon or a review. I was blown away by them. The moment I put the goggles on my first word was WOW. Having worn the same pair of goggles for years, I am not sure what I expected but what I got was different.

The first test of the Flow goggles was in Mission Bay in San Diego with the sun in full effect. This particular version of the Flow goggles has a blue lens versus a clear, smoke or mirrored lens. Despite the brightness of the sun, the tint on the goggles made my view bluer and not darker. This difference allowed me to swim and sight without any issues.

Each time I looked up the change from the water to the sky was seamless. This allowed me to focus on swimming versus trying to wonder where my marker was. If I was racing, this seamless transition would have allowed me to stay focused on my form versus wondering. This is in contrast to trying to figure out if you would be able to find the marker you were sighting off of.

Performance in Open Water and Pool

Since that first test in the open water, I have swam a number of times in the pool. My swim training is in an outdoor pool which would mimic the setting for an open water swim in a triathlon race.

Each time I put on the goggles, the gaskets are not only flexible and soft, they are also very secure. I have not had to make a single adjustment to the goggles once they are on my face. This may not seem like much but knowing that I will not have any issues with them while swimming allows me to focus on my form versus gear adjustments.

Hydrodynamics and Visibility: The Flow Difference

During both the open water and pool swims, I did notice the hydrodynamics of the goggles. This was by accident because it wasn’t something I had considered before. While swimming I could feel the water move around the goggles which was surprising at first. Now, I look forward to that feeling because it reminds me of being smoother in the water.

Final Verdict: Why Blueseventy Flow is My New Go-To

Each time I wear these goggles I am impressed. Nearly 10,000 yards of swimming with no leaks or fog issues plus great visibility has convinced me that I have found a set of goggles that I can use for a very long time.

Maybe over time I’ll just forget that they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. For now I’ll enjoy the smile I get from putting them on and swimming without any issues.
