  • My running shoes. I wear different brands, from Hoka, to Saucony, to Asics, to Adidas. Right now, I feel more comfortable with the Hokas for long distance racing (Rocket X) and training (Mach 6). But this can change next season, I’ve moved back and forth between these four brands throughout my triathlon career.

Luis Andarcia has transformed from a casual swimmer to an accomplished triathlete and coach over three decades. His journey shows how curiosity and dedication can transform a sedentary lifestyle into one of continuous athletic achievement and personal growth. As a USA Triathlon Level II certified coach and podcast host, Luis continues to inspire others while pursuing his own athletic goals. In Luis’ own words, this is his journey from beach kid to Ironman.

Early Years

Growing up, my main connection to sports came through beach visits with my family, where I learned to swim. My experience with organized sports was limited to brief stints in baseball, basketball, soccer, and indoor soccer during elementary school. Throughout high school and college, I maintained a relatively inactive lifestyle, focused more on social activities than athletic pursuits.

Introduction to Triathlon

My transformation began with my first job after college, where a chance encounter with a triathlete coworker sparked my interest in the sport. I took my first steps by purchasing a mountain bike and basic gear for my inaugural sprint distance race. Despite some rookie mistakes – wearing my helmet backward, using cycling gloves, and struggling through the run – I completed the race and was motivated to improve.

Racing Career in Venezuela

In Venezuela, I immersed myself in the local triathlon scene, participating in monthly races. While I never kept a precise count of my competitions, these regular events helped build my foundation in the sport.

California Chapter

After moving to San Francisco in 2004, I deepened my commitment to triathlon. I became a Personal Trainer in 2007 and achieved my USA Triathlon coaching certification in 2009. My racing achievements in California have been impressive, including completing the challenging Wildflower triathlon, conquering the Vineman course, and finishing the Big Kahuna in Santa Cruz. I have successfully competed in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon and completed four separate Alcatraz crossings. In 2023, I reached a significant milestone by participating in the 70.3 World Championship in Finland.

Current Focus

Now approaching my third Ironman race in 32 years of triathlon, I continue to excel in multiple roles. I balance my time as a father to two boys while serving as a USA Triathlon Level II certified coach through APX coaching, which I achieved in 2023. I host The APX Podcast and maintain my competitive edge as an age-group triathlete. My primary goals remain consistent: staying healthy, avoiding injuries, and continuing to improve not just as an athlete but in all aspects of my life. This is my journey from beach kid to ironman.
