The age-old question: what gear should I use? Well, let me tell you, it’s not as simple as just recommending the perfect piece of running gear. In fact, there is no answer. At least, not a one-size-fits-all answer. Choosing the right gear can be challenging.
As a long-time runner and past gear-reviewer, I’ve learned that the key to finding the right gear is to think about the bigger picture. What are you planning to use the gear for? Are you running on roads or trails? Are you doing short runs or long ultras? Do you have specific needs or issues that you’re trying to address? If you need to take off a sock to use as makeshift TP, is it booty soft? These are important things to take into account.Â
Let’s Start with Shoes
Let’s start with shoes. Many running stores will have you walk to the door and back to see if you need neutral or supportive shoes. But let’s be real, most of the time, the salesperson doesn’t really understand the basic selling points of each shoe, possibly reading the tech sheet. Have they run in the all the shoes they are selling? Even if they have knowledge of the shoes, they might be more concerned with getting rid of old inventory than finding the right shoe for you.
So, what’s the solution? Think about what you need the shoes to do for you. Are you going to be running on smooth roads or technical trails? Do you need cushioning or support? Do you have foot issues or back issues that need to be addressed? Do you have issues with lace bite or blisters on heels in certain brands It’s not just shoes. When it comes to packs, vests, jackets, water bottles, and other gear, the same principles apply. What are you planning to use the gear for? Do you need to carry a lot of stuff or just a little? Do you have specific needs or issues that you’re trying to address?

Not Always Relevant
Now, I know what you’re thinking. “What about all the gear reviews and recommendations out there?” Well, let me tell you, those can be helpful, but they’re not always relevant to your specific needs. And even if they are, they might not consider your personal preferences, body type, or quirks.
So, what’s the solution? Ask friends, read reviews, and most importantly, try it on in person. And if you do decide to buy gear, please support your local running store. They might not always have the latest and greatest gear, but they’ll have people who know what they’re talking about and can help you find the right gear for your needs.
What Works for Me
So now that I have gone over the basics, I will share some of my all-time favorite gear. It doesn’t mean the gear is the best, but it is what I find works best for me. Â

Again, these are items that I have come to depend on after years of testing different gear, personally and professionally. While these items are my personal favorites, that doesn’t mean that the fit or functionality will be right for you. Â
Experiment and Try New Things
And finally, don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things. You might find that you love a particular piece of gear, or you might find that it’s not for you. But either way, you’ll learn something new, and you’ll be one step closer to choosing the right gear for your needs.
