What happens when you combine two endurance athletes, running, sweat and Spotify beats? You get the 4x4x48 Challenge, tackled by Joe and Derek — and narrated with the kind of laughter, sweat, and soul only endurance athletes truly understand.
The challenge? Run 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours straight. For Joe, that meant pushing up to 160 miles logged in June but also just 6 hours of sleep over two days during the challenge. For Derek, it meant losing over 5,000 milliliters of sweat (thank you, Garmin). But for both? It meant reconnecting to the joy and community of movement — and music.
Music Makes the Miles Go By
The highlight wasn’t just the distance. It was the soundtrack.
Joe and Derek synced their Spotify accounts in real-time during the challenge, despite being separated by 3.5 hours of driving distance. Whether it was Sean James & The Shape Shifters, or community-suggested tracks like “Crazy Train” and “Welcome to the Jungle,” the playlist became their mental fuel. One runner even admitted to listening to “When Worlds Collide” five times during a 50-miler.
Music transformed solo suffering into a virtual party. The rhythm became a heartbeat that tied them — and their audience — together.
A Mental Reset Wrapped in Sound
Joe’s reason for diving into this challenge went beyond training. After a tough DNF at the Mohican 100, he needed a mental reset. The 4x4x48 challenge gave him more than that — it gave him confidence.
With music playing and community cheering, the physical miles became a secondary win. The real reward? The reminder that we can do hard things — and enjoy it when the soundtrack slaps.

Hustle in the Heartland: Racing for a Cause
From the jam session came another idea: Hustle in the Heartland — an 8-hour loop race on October 11th in Lebanon, Indiana. The best part? All proceeds go to Iolite Inc., which supports adults with intellectual disabilities.
And it’s not your typical race. Whether you do one loop or twenty, you pay 5K pricing. Everyone’s welcome. And yes, music will be part of the magic.
Music-Themed Races? Yes, Please.
Joe and Jason are taking things a step further. What if every runner had their own entrance music, WWE-style? How about if each aid station had a cultural theme with matching music? What if playlists were created from emails sent by runners before race day?
The possibilities are endless, and the team is inviting you to help shape the soundtrack.
Get Inspired. Get Moving.
Looking for your next dose of motivation? Want to laugh, sweat, run and maybe add a few Spotify beats to your playlist? This conversation is your jam.
Plug in. Turn it up. And don’t be surprised if you start dancing at mile three.
