Ultra Runners Debate German Baked Goods From The Aid Station | Food Fight Friday at the Aid Station

Funny Ultra Running Snacks That Will Make You Laugh Run Tri Bike

At Run Tri Bike, we know endurance sports can be grueling. But that doesn’t mean every step has to be serious. That’s why Food Fight Friday at the Aid Station presented by 7 Summits Snacks exists. We want to remind you that endurance sport can (and should) be a little ridiculous. In this week’s episode, our favorite game of “Eat, Toss, or Carry” gets a distinctly European twist: three German baked goods at mile 50 of your next ultra. This is your chance to discuss ultra running snacks in a funny and not so serious way.

The setup? You’ve just crested a brutal climb. Your legs are toast. Your brain is fuzzy. And now, you’re being asked:

Which of these foods will you eat, which will you toss, and which will you carry to the next aid station like a carbohydrate-based emotional support animal?
Your choices:
🥨 Pretzel
🍩 Krapfen (jam donut)
🍞 Stollen (fruit bread)

Let the pastry carnage begin.

The Ultra-Carb Showdown

Hosts Jason Bahamundi and Adam Lee are joined by the most Bavarian snack connoisseur we know, Mathias Eichler (of Trail Running Film Festival fame). Together, they tackle the biggest question since “How many gels is too many?”

Their picks:

  • Mathias: Crush the pretzel (a crime in at least three countries), carry the donut (possibly for self-defense?), toss the stollen (sugar bomb, be gone).

  • Jason: Toss the pretzel (!!!), eat the stollen (holiday vibes forever), carry the donut.

  • Adam: Crush the donut (deep sigh), carry the pretzel (redemption), toss the stollen (consistency is key).

As they debate, passionately, it becomes clear that endurance sports aren’t just about VO₂ max and lactate thresholds. They’re about opinions. Loud ones. About pastries.

Aid Stations, International Edition

This episode isn’t only about bread-based betrayal. Mathias shares stories from European races like Lavaredo Ultra Trail, where aid stations hand out bread topped with tomatoes, olive oil, and salt. This leads to a debate on whether fruit with salt is the aid station flex we didn’t know we needed.

From Canadian film tour dates to 7 Summits Snacks sponsorship shoutouts, the episode delivers laughs, snack cravings, and at least three spit takes.

Why It Matters

At its core, Food Fight Friday at the Aid Station isn’t just about snack strategy. It’s about what makes this community so special:

  • We’re a little weird

  • We laugh through suffering

  • We bond over aid station food

  • We respect anyone who can carry a donut for 10 miles and still PR

Episodes like this remind us that the miles go by faster when you’re laughing and that not all race-day decisions need to be about wattage and pace. Sometimes, they can just be about what you’d do with a fruit-stuffed bread roll when you’re 90% sweat and 10% grit.

Your Turn: What Would You Do?

Which would you eat, toss, or carry? (Warning: we will judge.)

And don’t forget to subscribe for more carbohydrate-fueled chaos. Because every Friday is a Food Fight and we discuss ultra running snacks in a way that will remind you that our sports can be funny even when you’re struggling.
