Fueling Smart at Sinister 7 Ultra Run Tri Bike Food Fight Friday at the Aid Station

Welcome to another exciting episode of Food Fight Friday at the Aid Station, brought to you by Run Tri Bike! This week, we’re coming to you from the heart of the Sinister 7 Ultra, a race renowned for its rugged beauty and the grueling demands it places on endurance athletes. Set in the breathtaking and challenging terrain of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, specifically the Crows Nest Pass, this race tests not just physical endurance but also smart decision-making, especially when it comes to nutrition. In this Food Fight Friday are we fueling smart at Sinister 7 Ultra? Watch and find out.

A Unique Nutrition Challenge

In this episode, Adam Lee of Community Trail Running and our Founder, Jason Bahamundi, take on the challenge of selecting the best aid station foods. Unlike past episodes where the goal was to avoid the worst option, this time it’s about making the smartest choice to sustain Jason’s energy levels and help him power through the race, all while considering the unique challenge of running in bear country!

The Contenders: Three Foods, One Choice

Adam presents Jason with three potential fuel options, each with its own benefits and challenges:

1. T-bone Steak Packed with protein and iron, this hearty choice promises sustained energy. But is it practical for an ultra-marathoner on the go? The dense nature of steak might make it difficult to digest while running, and it could weigh Jason down. However, the high protein content is excellent for muscle repair and endurance.

2. Pancake Breakfast with Eggs and Sausage A classic breakfast staple offering a balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fats. This meal could provide the necessary energy boost and sustained fuel. The question is whether such a heavy meal could lead to discomfort or sluggishness on the trails. Pancakes are great for quick carbs, but combined with eggs and sausage, it might be too much to handle during a run.

3. Grilled Corn on the Cob with Butter A lighter option that’s easy to eat on the run, but does it provide enough fuel for the demanding Sinister 7 course? Corn is a good source of carbs, and the butter adds some fat for longer-lasting energy. However, it might not offer the comprehensive nutritional support needed for an ultra-marathon.

Decision Time: Eat, Toss, or Carry

Jason weighs his options, considering not only how these foods will fuel his journey from aid station to aid station but also how they might help in deterring any curious bears he might encounter on the trail. It’s a mix of strategy, nutrition, and a bit of wilderness survival! Are his choices the best for fueling smart at Sinister 7 Ultra?
