Indu Vaidyanathan’s story is one of those stories that reminds you of the human spirit and being able to conquer challenges while inspiring others. Her journey into endurance sports began at the age of 32 in 1999, shortly after the birth of her first son. Indu, now 57, reflects on how this journey has shaped her life and provided a foundation for inspiring others to achieve their goals, regardless of age or initial ability.

Indu’s initial motivation was simple but profound: she wanted to take care of herself to take better care of her family. “When I found out I was expecting my first child, I was consistently working out. But somewhere around the sixth month, things started slipping. I gained a lot of weight, and after my son was born, I found myself 40 pounds heavier,” Indu recalls. Determined to reclaim her health, she began waking up at 5:00 a.m. to run on a treadmill, a routine that marked the beginning of her long and rewarding journey in endurance sports.

Overcoming Fear and Building Strength

Indu’s story is not just about running; it’s about overcoming fear and embracing new challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she took up biking to escape the confinement of her home. “I am such an outdoors kind of girl, and I just needed to get on that bike,” she says. Despite initial fears of traffic and learning to handle a road bike, she persevered with the support of friends and family.

Swimming, however, was an entirely different challenge. Growing up in India, Indu never had the opportunity to learn how to swim. “The fear of water was real,” she admits. But with encouragement from her friends and a group called Tri It For Life, she tackled this fear head-on. “I learned to float, and that floating was my safe haven. Every time I looked up at the sky while floating on my back, I felt at peace.” This was the first step in going from stress to success in endurance sports and life.

Finding Community and Support

A significant factor in Indu’s success has been the support of her community. Friends who saw potential in her, and the coaches at Tri It For Life, played crucial roles in her journey. “My friends saw so much potential in me. They knew I was an amazing motivator. They kept pushing me, saying, ‘You can do this.’ And guess what? I actually have a pool in my backyard now, and every time I look at it, I remember how far I’ve come,” Indu says with a smile.

The structured training with Tri It For Life, which included biking, running, and swimming, helped her prepare for her first triathlon. Indu’s dedication and the encouragement from her peers turned her fear into confidence. “The first time I jumped into the deep end, I panicked. But the women around me supported me, saying, ‘You will come back up. Your body will rise up. Just take it easy.’ And they were right. Now, I can swim confidently.”

Embracing the Triathlon Challenge

Indu’s progression in triathlons mirrors her journey in running. From her first 5k to marathons and ultras, she has consistently pushed her boundaries. “I did my first sprint triathlon in June, and I aced the biking and running. Swimming was still a challenge, but I showed up, practiced, and overcame my fears,” she shares.

What makes Indu’s story unique is her ability to inspire others. Indu is an endurance runner who used that ability to conquer new heights through climbing mountains. Many are going to be nervous about climbing Mt Kilimanjaro and Indu is no different, Tackling the fear of high altitude used to prevent her from moving forward. Now it inspires her because it is another fear she has conquered.

When you learn that Indu is an endurance runner and mountain climber you understand why others are inspired by her. As a board member of Tri It For Life she explains her journeys to the top of Mt . Kilimanjaro, Machu Picchu and Everest Base camp. These experiences provide perspective for others to get involved in triathlon.

Her involvement with Tri It For Life as a board member is proof of her commitment to helping others. “At 57, jumping into the pool and going from stress to success in the water is not something many can say they’ve done. But I want to show others that age is just a number. You can achieve anything if you put your mind to it,” Indu emphasizes.

Lessons Learned and Advice for Others

Indu’s journey is filled with valuable lessons. She firmly believes that having a support system is crucial. “Whether it’s your family, friends, or a group like Tri It For Life, having someone to hold you accountable and motivate you is essential,” she advises.

Another key lesson is to enjoy the journey and not get bogged down by metrics. “I used to be obsessed with my Garmin, constantly checking my pace and times. But now, I focus on enjoying the experience. I’ve given up my Garmin, and it’s made my training much more enjoyable,” she says.

Indu also highlights the importance of self-care and putting oneself first. “My mom always told me that to take care of others, you need to take care of yourself. This principle has guided me throughout my journey. Self-care is not selfish; it’s necessary.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

Indu’s impact extends beyond her personal achievements. She has inspired many women in her community to take up endurance sports. “I look back and see how many lives I’ve touched. Women who never thought they could run, bike, or swim now believe they can because they’ve seen me do it. It’s a humbling experience,” she says.

Her message to those considering starting their journey in endurance sports is simple: “Just start. Don’t listen to the negative voices. You might take longer, but you will succeed. Age, fear, and inexperience are not barriers; they are challenges to be overcome.”

The Road Ahead

As Indu continues her journey, she remains focused on inspiring others and pushing her limits. She dreams of completing more triathlons and perhaps even an Ironman someday. These dreams mean that she will have to confront another fear. That fear is of swimming in the open water but like other fears, Indu will take it on and be successful. “I haven’t done a full Ironman yet, but it’s on my list. I know I can do it because I’ve already achieved so much I once thought impossible,” she says with determination.
