For many, the journey into endurance sports is an unexpected one, filled with twists and turns that lead to unforeseen destinations. Jason Viox’s story is no exception. His running journey started in a small town in Arkansas, called Wynne. Viox found himself in a peculiar scenario and was seeking a meaningful pursuit amidst the backdrop of his journalism career. It was early 2013 when he stumbled upon the Nike+ app, an encounter that would mark the beginning of his love affair with running. That path from the first stride to the long run is evidence that there is a spot at the starting line for everybody.

Reflecting on his initiation into the world of endurance sports, Viox recalls, “I kind of fell into it. Once I started using the app to keep track of my runs, I got into it from there. I liked seeing the progress I made, the miles I got in, and after my first race ever, I just kept going from there.” It was a blend of curiosity and the desire for self-improvement that moved him forward. That desire would ignite a passion that would shape his future endeavors.

Embracing the Journey

Jason’s journey into running wasn’t a leap into the unknown. Having dabbled in track during his high school years, he found peace in the rhythmic cadence of his footsteps. “I didn’t want to be stuck inside all the time. So one of my colleagues at the newspaper got me into running,” he recounts. What began as a quest for exploration soon transformed into a steadfast commitment, fueled by the sense of freedom that running provided.

His inaugural race, the Mucka Mania 10K, marked a significant milestone in his journey. Despite initial apprehensions, Jason’s determination propelled him through the course, setting the stage for future challenges. “I kind of took a bit of a leap, doing the 10K right off the bat,” he admits. “But at that point, since I had extra free time, I hit the running thing hard.” It was this dedication that laid the foundation for his running pursuits, paving the way for greater feats on the horizon.

Navigating Challenges and Growth

As Viox’s running journey progressed, he encountered his fair share of obstacles and setbacks. From grappling with the demands of overtraining to confronting personal loss, each challenge presented an opportunity for growth. “I used running as my way to process things,” he reflects. “But I kind of started doing it too much and probably put that above other priorities, which was, of course, a mistake.” Yet, amidst the trials, his passion for running remained and provided him comfort in times of adversity.

As he prepares to embark on the next chapter of his life as a father, Jason confronts the prospect of balancing his newfound responsibilities with his enduring love for running. “I am a better person when I run,” he acknowledges. “But it’s going to be hard to know exactly what that looks like with a son on the way.” With uncertainty on the horizon, he remains committed to finding equilibrium, recognizing the importance of adaptability in the face of change.

Paying It Forward

Beyond personal milestones, Viox’s journey extends to the realm of community and service. Inspired by his late grandmother’s legacy of volunteerism, he seeks to impart a similar ethos to his son. “I wanted to honor her memory in a way that was more of me,” he explains. “So being able to help out with races, whether participating or volunteering, is something I want to pass on.” His aspiration to become a race director embodies a commitment to giving back. Jason wants to ensure that others have the opportunity to experience the power of running.

Getting started in endurance sports is not easy. Based on the idea of giving back, Viox offers sage advice to aspiring athletes. “Get involved,” he urges. “Whether it’s joining a local running group or connecting with communities online, the support and camaraderie are invaluable.” With new challenges on the horizon, Jason is an inspiration for those heading out on their own paths.
