Starting Before You Feel Ready

There is a moment every new runner faces and it kinda sounds something like this:
“What if I can’t do it?”
“What if I look ridiculous?”
“What if everybody else belongs except me?”

For a lot of everyday athletes, fear shows up long before the starting line. It shows up while tying shoes in the bedroom while wondering if running is only for fast people with expensive gear and perfect abs.

Then along comes someone like Val Porter.

Community Changes Everything

Val’s running journey did not begin with confidence. It began with grief, body image struggles, and trying to balance taking care of herself while also taking care of everyone else first.

In other words, it began exactly where many runners start.

When Val returned to running in 2022, she quickly realized something important: running gets easier when people stop trying to do it alone.

That belief eventually became Val’s Aid Station, a growing community built on encouragement, laughter, snacks, glitter, and making runners feel welcome no matter their pace.

For real though, if there are snacks involved, most runners are already halfway convinced.

Showing Others They Belong

What makes Val’s story powerful is not medals or finish times. It is the way she shows up for people who are scared to begin.

She reminds new runners that support matters. Confidence matters. Community matters.

For mother runners and women runners especially, having people who believe in you can completely change the experience.

The truth is simple: running is better when nobody feels alone.

That is what an everyday athlete looks like. Someone willing to do it scared while helping others believe they can too.

And sometimes, chasing your dreams starts with one brave step and someone cheering beside you.
