I’ve pondered the thoughts of a chick in a shell before it hatches. Tiny body, in a dark place, waiting for the moment to break through, finding comfort in their warm world. Even as they gain strength in their protective shell, they continue to conceal their vulnerability to the outside world. It is when they crack through that vulnerability presents itself. Bacteria, predators, and potential unacceptance from the other chicks are all risk factors. However, instinctually, they join the wild and natural world anyway, tackling whatever comes at them. They wait for the breakthrough.
Slowly But Surely
Running is so similar. At first, running alone, you grow confidence slowly but surely. The thought of participating in a running group or race can bring anxiety and uneasiness. There is typically a progression of events: thinking about running, stepping outside, running alone, running alone for a long time, running with friends/significant other, running in a race, and running in a social setting like a run club.

Connect with Others
Running alone is a comfortable place for so many. There aren’t many people to judge and thoughts flow through without interruption from others. It takes guts to join in stride with fellow runners. So many runners are solo artists, perfecting their craft any chance they get on their own two feet. This unique sport holds an incredible opportunity to connect with others and create a space where others can be vulnerable. Stepping out into the world of races or group running is like going on stage in front of an audience. Not only are you exposing physical challenges and limits, but you are letting people have a peek into your emotions and hardships.
A Hatching Chick
My personal experience in running has helped me through the death of my sister in 2023. Opening up about my experience was just like a hatching chick. As I ran with others more often, I had more intimate conversations, and learned so much about the interesting individuals I surround myself with.
Connect People Through Running
After that, I made it my mission to connect people through running, whether it is a run club, partnering up for an evening run with a friend, or captaining a relay race. The more I’ve opened up and peaked my head out of my shell, I’ve seen others do it in the most beautiful way, exchanging stories of love, loss, happiness, and grief.
Not Just About Strava Miles
I’ve had people open up to me about their own loss, or their challenges and struggles, as well as their funny and happy moments. Once I hatched as a runner, the game completely changed. It brought on a new and deeper meaning. It’s not just about Strava miles, but the emotions and connection to people that define this sport.
Leave The Realm of Comfortability
Break out of your shell and leave the realm of comfortability. Your growth is limitless once you leave comfort behind. You may not know your impact as a runner right now, but even if you do, take on the challenge of opening up to another runner. It might lead to a newfound friendship or a feeling of ease and calm that you are not alone in this world. It’s time for the breakthrough.
It’s time to hatch.
