Songs That Won’t Let You Quit
If you’ve ever been at mile 18 of a marathon and started negotiating with yourself like a hostage negotiator… don’t ask questions just scroll to the bottom and press play. You can come back and read the rest of this later.
On this week’s What’s In Your Earbuds?, Joe Hardin and I chose a theme that all of us can get behind: songs that won’t let you quit.
You know what I’m talking about.
The song that spells it out for you or maybe, the artist who might as well be standing on your shoulder screaming, “Keep. Going.”
And because this is Run Tri Bike and we’re everyday athletes with real lives, this conversation wasn’t just about running. It was about business and burnout. We talked about the weeks when you question everything.
Joe had one of those weekends. The kind where shutting down your small business and moving into the woods sounds oddly peaceful. Meanwhile, Lori and I had lunch with a friend who’s also a business owner and, spoiler alert, she’s swimming upstream too.
Turns out, a lot of us are.
So instead of pretending we’re fine, we turned to music.

Why Music Matters When You Want to Quit
Music has this sneaky way of spelling out what we can’t say out loud.
When DMX growls “X Gon’ Give It To Ya,” it’s less about aggression and more about accountability. When Destiny’s Child sings “I’m a Survivor,” it’s not subtle. It’s declarative. It’s spelled out.
No metaphors or a hidden meaning.
Just: You’re not done yet.
And sometimes the right song title is all you need.
Don’t Stop Believin’.
Eye of the Tiger.
The message is clear. It’s practically yelling at you.
Community Playlists and Collective Resilience
What I love most about this episode wasn’t even our picks. It was yours as well as the choices from the Public Radio Runner, Kevin.
Our community showed up with songs that have pulled them through marathons, ultras, small business meltdowns, and Monday mornings. We’re building a 75-hour Spotify playlist filled with tracks that fuel finish lines and second chances.
That’s the beauty of being part of the Run Tri Bike community.
We don’t just consume content.
Our community contributes.
They care loudly.
And we show up for each other.
And yes, we went off the rails. We debated whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie (it is not). We talked Japanese soy sauce ice cream. I almost ran into Jet Tila at the mall.
But underneath the humor is this truth:
You are not alone in wanting to quit.
You are also not alone in choosing not to.
Sometimes you don’t need another motivational quote.
You need a song that spells it out for you.
So I’ll ask you what I asked on the show:
What song won’t let you quit?
Drop it in the comments. Let’s keep building this playlist.
