Running Toward Who You Become
“The finish line wasn’t where I found myself. It was somewhere around mile eighteen.”
Most runners dream about personal records. They have visions of faster marathons or longer races. Big medals? Yes, please!
Santino Williams did too.
But the race that changed him wasn’t his fastest. It was his slowest.
During a recent episode of Beyond The Finish Line, Santino sat down with Joe Hardin to tell the story of how running slowly became something much bigger than exercise. It became part of who he is.
Ironically, it didn’t start that way.
Running Began as Punishment
Like many athletes, Santino grew up believing running was something coaches made you do after making a mistake.
Running wasn’t fun. It certainly didn’t feel like freedom. Actually, it felt like punishment (because it kinda was!)
Years later he returned to running for a familiar reason.
Lose weight. Get healthier, clear his mind.
But something unexpected happened.
Instead of counting down the minutes until he could stop, he started looking forward to getting outside.
Running became something he wanted instead of something he had to do.
That mindset shift would be what changed everything for Santino.

The First Finish Line Matters
Santino still remembers the nerves before his first race.
The fear of not belonging and a voice that kept asking:
“Am I really a runner?”
He discovered what thousands of everyday athletes discover every weekend.
Nobody cared how fast he was. People simply welcomed him. One finish line became another. Then another.
Eventually those races led to marathons. But the title “runner” still felt difficult to own.
It wasn’t until other people started calling him one that he finally believed it himself.
His Slowest Marathon Became His Favorite
Oakland wasn’t supposed to become memorable. It was supposed to be another marathon.
Instead, everything fell apart around mile eighteen when his legs refused to cooperate.
Running turned into walking. The finish time was nearly two hours slower than normal.
Yet something incredible happened.
Volunteers encouraged him. Other runners checked on him. Spectators never stopped cheering.
Instead of remembering disappointment, Santino remembers community. He doesn’t remember failure….he only remembers kindness.
That race reminded him why he runs.
Not for numbers or social media kudos. It isn’t even for the medals, even though they are great momentos.
It is for people.
There Is No Finish Line
Joe and Santino spent much of the conversation talking about burnout.
Training can become another obligation.
Paces become pressure. Metrics become expectations. Eventually the joy disappears.
Santino believes runners need permission to play again. To explore and laugh. Sing along with your favorite songs during a run. Take it another step and image running through scenes from Lord of the Rings.
That matters and gives us a great reminder of why we started in the first place.
A marathon will eventually end but the journey never does.
Sometimes the greatest victory isn’t crossing the finish line.
It’s becoming someone you didn’t know you could be.
