Every Mile Has A Soundtrack

Why Everyday Athletes Need a Running Motivation Playlist Run Tri Bike Everyday Athlete Clubhouse

When I think back on some of my favorite races, I don’t remember every mile.

I don’t remember every climb. I definitely don’t remember every split.

But I remember the music that was playing at aid stations or randomly on the course.

There is always one that somehow finds you at exactly the right moment.

Maybe it’s halfway through a long training run or climbing the final hill before the finish. How about hearing it while you’re sitting your car after a race?

That’s what made this week’s episode of What’s In Your Earbuds? so much fun.

It started with a simple question: What were we listening to during a recent trail race?

Before long, the conversation became something much bigger.

Every Runner Has That Song

Music is funny. A three-minute song can transport you back ten years and remind you of a race or a friendship. The memories of a family member can come rushing back. Or the moment you decided to believe in yourself.

That’s why playlists are so personal and not just a collection of songs. They’re collections of memories.

During the episode, we talked about Joe Hardin tackling the Vol State 500K and wondered what someone listens to while covering more than 300 miles.

Maybe the playlist changes. Did he play a certain song when things got hard?

Or maybe the memories attached to those songs became just as important as the music itself.

More Than Background Noise

Running has a way of stripping life down to the basics.

One foot. Then the next. Sometimes music fills the silence.

Other times it helps us keep moving when we’d rather stop. But the playlist is rarely the whole story.

Every song becomes connected to the people we meet, the places we travel, and the challenges we overcome.

Years later, hearing that same song can instantly bring those moments back. So powerful!

Community Sounds Different

One of my favorite parts of What’s In Your Earbuds? has been the community.

Every week runners recommend artists I’ve never heard of. Some love heavy metal. Others swear by hip-hop. Some race to country music. Others run in complete silence. Nobody is trying to convince everyone they’re right. They’re simply sharing what works for them.

It reminds me that there isn’t one perfect playlist. Just like there isn’t one perfect runner.

There is simply a spot at the starting line for everybody and every body.

What’s In Your Earbuds?

Maybe your favorite running song changes every season or you’ve been listening to the same artist for twenty years.

Is your playlist is filled with songs nobody else has ever heard?

That’s the beauty of it. Music is personal. Running is personal.

The stories we create along the way are personal. So the next time you head out the door, pay attention.

The next song you hear might become the soundtrack to your next unforgettable mile.

What’s one song you’ll never skip during a run?
