Songs Carry Us Through Chaos

Music Matters During Hard Runs

There’s a certain point in every hard workout where your brain starts negotiating against you. Usually around 30 mkinutes in. Or during hill repeats. Or almost always,  five minutes after you confidently said, “This run feels easy.”

That’s where music enters the conversation.

On this episode of What’s In Your Earbuds?, Joe Hardin and I started talking about the songs we listen to when life gets overwhelming. What followed was exactly what happens when runners, nostalgia, humor, and live comments collide in real time.

It felt a lot like race day chaos.

The Songs That Get Us Through

From Bob Marley To DMX

What fascinated me most during this conversation was how personal music becomes when life gets hard. Some athletes need Bob Marley to calm the nervous system before a race. Others need DMX screaming in their earbuds while attacking a climb like it owes them money.

Neither answer is wrong. And that’s the beauty of music for endurance athletes. The right song can completely change the emotional direction of a workout. Frank Sinatra can remind you of home. Disney songs can reconnect you to comfort. Heavy metal can turn frustration into forward motion.

Music becomes fuel long before the first gel packet opens.

When The Conversation Completely Derails

Kilts, Keyboards, And Community

Of course, because this is What’s In Your Earbuds?, we somehow ended up debating broken iPhone keyboards, hometown music legends, and an accidental fashion company called Full Fabric Apparel.

Yes. There were also kilts involved. But underneath kilt and the humor was something bigger: our connection to the audience.

The live audience came flying into the comments faster than a downhill 5K split, sharing songs, memories, and stories that reminded me why the endurance community matters so much. Running may look individual from the outside, but moments like this prove we’re all carrying something together.

Have you ever used music to survive a hard run, hard day, or hard season of life? Yeah, us too. Check out this episode and you’ll feel like you’re at home.
