Every endurance athlete has a story of challenge and triumph, but Jennifer Mann’s journey stands out as proof to the everyday athlete’s incredible resilience. Living with ankylosing spondylitis, an autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints and spine, Jennifer has transformed her health struggles into a powerful narrative of overcoming chronic pain through hope and determination.
A Year of Transformation
In 2024, Jennifer experienced what she describes as her most challenging year. A toxic work environment triggered severe flare-ups of her autoimmune condition, forcing her to step back from her training and reassess her entire approach to life and athletics. “I was just living in stress,” Jennifer recalls. “Sleep was almost non-existent, working all the time. Taking care of myself was not at the top of my priority list.”
The onset of her health crisis was both sudden and overwhelming. What began as a typical year quickly devolved into a nightmare of medical uncertainty and physical pain. Her autoimmune disease, typically manageable, suddenly manifested in ways she had never experienced before. The inflammation spread beyond her joints, affecting her skin, eyes, heart, and lungs.
Doctors’ appointments became a constant in her life, with an endless stream of tests, scans, and consultations. Each medical visit brought new concerns and heightened anxiety, pushing Jennifer to the brink of despair. “Everything was off,” she explains. “I was constantly in and out of medical facilities, undergoing MRIs, breathing tests, and countless other examinations. I looked bad, I felt worse, and I had no idea what was happening to my body or how I would overcome this chronic pain.”
The turning point came when she made a conscious decision to prioritize her health and well-being. Despite experiencing a massive flare-up that threatened to derail her athletic goals, Jennifer refused to give up.
Pushing Through the Challenges
Unexpected Achievements
Even during her most difficult moments, Jennifer’s spirit remained unbroken. In April, while still experiencing significant pain from her autoimmune condition, she completed a challenging trail half marathon at Minnewaska State Park. “I was in so much pain. I was almost in tears at the end, but I made it through,” she says.
Her resilience continued to shine through in June when she participated in a sprint triathlon, unexpectedly placing third in her age group. This achievement was particularly meaningful, coming after months of health challenges and uncertainty.
The Road to Recovery
Jennifer’s approach to managing her condition is holistic and mindful. She emphasizes the importance of:
- Prioritizing sleep
- Focusing on nutrition
- Creating a supportive environment
- Connecting with others who understand her journey

Looking Forward: Ironman and Beyond
A Redemption Race
For 2024, Jennifer has set her sights on the Ironman Musselman 70.3 in Geneva, New York. This race represents more than just a physical challenge – it’s a symbol of her comeback and resilience. Her first 70.3 experience ended in disqualification. The second 70.3 race she was registered had to be cancelled because of her health. DNF’ing (Did Not Finish) plus showing that she is overcoming her chronic pain from 2024, makes this race a deeply personal redemption journey.
“I feel like I owe it to myself,” Jennifer shares. “I hope that by putting in the time and work and crossing the finish line, I can help inspire other people in similar situations.”
Inspiring Her Family
As a mother of three boys, Jennifer’s journey carries an additional layer of significance. While her children may not fully understand the extent of her challenges now, she hopes her perseverance will be a lasting lesson.
“I’m super thankful every day that I get up and I’m still moving,” she says. “I don’t take any of that for granted and I hope my kids see that.”
For parents navigating their own challenges, Jennifer’s story is a powerful truth about parenting: children are silent observers, absorbing far more than we realize. Every struggle overcome, every boundary pushed, becomes an unspoken lesson in resilience. They may not articulate their admiration in the moment, but these experiences become the invisible foundation of their own future strength.
When parents choose to show up, to fight through being knocked down, to pursue dreams despite obstacles, they’re writing a story of possibility for their children. It’s not about being perfect or never failing, but about showing that setbacks are temporary, that we can adapt, and that personal growth is a continuous journey.
Jennifer’s sons may not fully comprehend the depth of her battle with ankylosing spondylitis now, but the seeds of inspiration are being planted with every class she teaches, every mile she trains, every finish line she crosses.
Advice for Others Facing Challenges
Jennifer’s most powerful advice for those dealing with chronic conditions or life challenges is simple yet profound:
- Focus on your entire life, not just your health
- Surround yourself with supportive people
- Be patient with yourself
- Keep moving forward, even when progress seems slow
The Power of One Step at a Time
Her story reminds us that progress isn’t always linear. Sometimes, success means simply showing up, being present, and refusing to be defined by our limitations.
As she prepares for her Ironman 70.3 and potentially her first marathon, Jennifer continues to inspire not just those with ankylosing spondylitis, but anyone facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
