When Musicians Steal The Screen
A Playlist Conversation That Went Sideways (In The Best Way)
There are two things you should know before listening to What’s In Your Earbuds? Monday with Joe and me.
First: we start with a topic.
Second: we rarely stay on that topic.
This week’s conversation began with a simple idea: musicians who became actors in movies and TV shows. Pretty straightforward, right?
About five minutes in, it became what most of our episodes become which is a joyful mess of music, movies, nostalgia, and the Run Tri Bike community throwing suggestions into the conversation faster than runners grabbing cups at an aid station.
Honestly, it’s one of my favorite things about the show.
From The Stage To The Screen
Joe and I started with some of the obvious names.
Mark Wahlberg came up immediately. If you grew up in the 90s, you remember Marky Mark. If you watched Entourage, you know how big his Hollywood footprint became.
Then there’s Lady Gaga, whose performance in A Star Is Born proved she could dominate the screen the same way she dominates a stage.
And of course, Ice Cube. The man basically built an entire second career in film while still being one of the most recognizable voices in hip-hop history.
But here’s where things got fun.

When The Community Joins The Conversation
One of the best parts of What’s In Your Earbuds? is the community participation.
As Joe and I were tossing out names, the audience started jumping in with their own suggestions.
Suddenly we were talking about:
-
Tupac in Juice
-
Queen Latifah in Set It Off and Living Single
-
Mos Def appearing in multiple films
-
RZA in Ghost Dog
-
Dolly Parton in 9 to 5
-
Olivia Newton-John in Grease
The list just kept growing.
It felt a lot like a long run conversation where someone throws out a random topic and suddenly the entire group has opinions. Lots of opinions.
The Rat Pack Question
There was a moment when Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra came up. So I asked Joe this question:
Do we have a modern equivalent of the Rat Pack?
Frank and Dean could walk onto a stage or a movie set and instantly command attention.
Back then, fame carried a different kind of gravity.
Today? Social media changed everything. Fame moves faster. Trends move faster. Attention moves faster.
But maybe that’s the fun of it? Maybe that is the struggle of it all?
Why What’s In Your Earbuds? Monday Matters
Are we all runners? Yes we are. Are we more than that? Double YES.
And that’s really what What’s In Your Earbuds? is all about.
We aren’t talking about just songs or playlists. What we are doing is getting to know each other. Having fun, laughing, debating, creating community.
These are the moments that connect all of us as Everyday Athletes.
Now I’m curious.
Which musician do you think made the best jump from music to acting? Drop them in the comments.
