Joy Is The Marathon

Joy Is The Marathon | Running, Mindset & Inclusive Community Run Tri Bike Everyday Athlete

Joy Is The Marathon

There are some conversations that feel like content. And then there are some that feel like hanging out with the community.

When Dalia from Corremos Sacramento connected me with Ivan Casillas, I had a hunch we would connect on a  Fireside Chat and would land differently. After featuring him in our How It All Started series on Run Tri Bike, I kept following his journey. I did this, not because I had to, but because I wanted to. That’s always a sign.

🍍 Start With Pizza, Stay For Perspective

Yes, we opened with pineapple on pizza. (He’s a yes. I’m still evaluating our friendship.)

But what unfolded after the toppings debate became about transformation.

Ivan didn’t always call himself a runner. That evolution of going from someone who ran to someone who embodies the running community is something so many everyday athletes wrestle with. At what point do we claim the title? First 5K or your First marathon? First time we don’t quit when it gets uncomfortable?

🧠 The Real Marathon Is The Training Block

We talked about the runner’s high. About bonking. About those quiet miles where your thoughts get loud. We traded race nutrition horror stories (yes, I brought up my gel miscalculation disaster at Indian Wells), and we laughed at how experience teaches lessons Strava never will.

Ivan dropped a line that stuck with me: Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good enough.

That’s marathon training.
>That’s life.

The real marathon isn’t race day. It’s the months of showing up when the weather stinks, when business feels uncertain, when motivation dips. Race day is the celebration or a victory lap, if you will The work happens long before the start line.

🤝 No Gatekeeping Allowed

What makes Ivan special isn’t just his positivity. It’s his posture. He refuses to gatekeep this sport. Boston qualifier? Welcome. First mile without walking? Also welcome.

He adds seats to the table.

As a CIM ambassador, father, husband, analyst, and friend, he carries those roles with intention. He is a “keeper of secrets”….you know, the runner people open up to on long runs. The steady presence. The reminder that you belong.

🍒 Cherry Garcia & Big Perspective

We closed with cherry Garcia ice cream, brownie corner pieces, and chilaquiles as recovery fuel. Because running can be serious but it’s also supposed to be fun.

That’s the reminder here.

Running isn’t just about pace charts and PRs. It’s about becoming a better version of yourself while keeping perspective. It’s about joy and people.

No podium required.

Just show up.
