Everyday Athlete Burnout Signs | More Than Metrics in Running Run Tri Bike

More Than Miles And Metrics

The Moment No One Tracks

There’s a moment in running and endurance sports that doesn’t show up on your watch.

No, I’m not talking about splits and paces. I am also not talking about PRs. This discussion is about the signs of burnout.

The question that hits mid-run or mid-life: “Why don’t I care like I used to?”

This is where burnout lives and I’ve been there. So has my guest, Santino Williams.

In this edition of Riding The Edge, Santino and I sat down to talk about something every everyday athlete faces but few admit out loud.

Burnout Doesn’t Show Up Overnight

We love to think burnout is a dramatic crash. It’s not.

There is a subtly to it.

We start by skipping one run… then another.
The choice to scroll instead of sleeping.
Chasing someone else’s highlight reel and wondering why yours feels… off.

You are nodding your head in agreement because you know 1, or all, of these signs.

For Santino, it became real when he made the decision to skip the Pittsburgh Marathon. He didn’t skip because he wasn’t capable of running 26.2 miles, but because he knew he shouldn’t.

That’s not weakness. That is knowing when to cut it short so you can keep enjoying these sports.

The Hustle Lie We Keep Believing

Somewhere along the way, we bought into the idea that rest equals failure.

We should run more and do more. The idea that we can be more if we just did more……

But here’s the truth: burnout doesn’t come from doing too little. It comes from doing too much without purpose.

We’re not machines. We are humans trying to balance training, work, relationships and everything in between.

What Actually Helps

We aren’t talking about quitting. no, we are discussing recalibrating.

Call a friend instead of liking their post.
Take a nap without negotiating with your watch.
Check your “why” like you check your gear.

Because being an everyday athlete isn’t about maximizing every metric. We want to sustain joy over time and be able to talk about our sports with joy when we are into our 60s and 70s.

More Than The Data

You are not your pace or your mileage.
That last race result? That isn’t all of your value.

You’re the story behind all of it.

And sometimes the strongest move you can make… is stepping back so you can keep moving forward.

If you’ve been riding the edge, maybe this is your sign to pause.

Not to stop but to remember why you started.
