Apple Wars at Mile 72

Apple Fritter Ultra Marathon | Eat, Toss, or Carry at Mile 72

Laughter at the Aid Station

Endurance sports are tough. There’s sweat, there’s pain, and sometimes there’s that awkward moment when you question every life decision that led you to mile 72 of a 100-mile ultra marathon. That’s exactly why we created Food Fight Friday at the Aid Station, to add humor to the chaos. This week’s episode asked the all-important question: Would you eat, toss, or carry an apple fritter the size of your head while deep into an ultra?

The Concept: Eat, Toss, or Carry

For the uninitiated, the game is simple but hilarious. We present three absurd food options. One gets eaten, one gets tossed, and one gets carried to the next aid station. The decisions are surprisingly strategic because any ultrarunner knows that what you eat at mile 72 can make or break the finish line.

Meet the Cast of Chaos

With co-host Adam Lee off tackling the Divide 200 (because apparently 200 miles sounds fun), Jason Bahamundi welcomed the fabulous Sheena, Adam’s wife, as a guest co-host. Rhinestone headdress? Check. Feather fans? Check. Burlesque energy in the middle of a nutrition debate? Absolutely. Add endurance athlete Heidi Baker to the mix, and suddenly, aid station banter turned into full-blown comedy.

The Apple Showdown

The three apple-themed contenders:

🥖 Sourdough toast with apple butter
🍩 Apple cider donuts
🍎 Apple fritter the size of your head

Heidi took her decision seriously, weighing calories, mess factor, and the danger of carrying apple-flavored sadness in her hydration vest. In the end, she ate the toast, tossed the fritter, and carried the donuts. Logical. Strategic. Way smarter than Jason’s plan to eat all three and pray for pancakes later.

Why Pancakes Always Win

Speaking of pancakes, Heidi confessed they’re her ultimate mid-race snack. Hot, fluffy, dripping in syrup or better yet, covered in Nutella. Pancakes are proof that endurance athletes don’t just run for medals. We run for food.

Fueling the Fun with 7 Summits Snacks

Of course, we can’t talk endurance nutrition without a nod to our friends at 7 Summits Snacks. Whether it’s coffee crunch or mint chocolate, these bars are made for athletes who want fuel that tastes good and works hard. Because yes, sometimes your mid-race survival depends on snacks you actually want to eat.

The Bigger Picture: Fun and Community

This episode was about more than donuts and fritters. It was about laughter, community, and remembering that endurance sports don’t always have to be serious. Whether you’re chasing cutoffs or chasing pancakes, the joy is found in sharing the miles, and the snacks, with others.
