Path of the Flood Historic Races

When: May 29, 2021
Where: Johnstown, PA
Race type(s): 14M, 8M, 5K

The Path of the Flood Historic Races are back for 2021!

As we open registration, there are many Covid-related restrictions currently in place, making a few changes necessary.

1)   MANDATORY CAP – there is a cap of 250 runners per distance

2)   There will be NO bib transfers allowed

3)   The park will not be open to spectators and there is no after-race festival planned, per current CDC and PA Department of Health Covid guidelines

4)   Any changes to these restrictions will be noted on the Active registration page, the Path of the Flood website, JAHA and CCCRA Facebook pages, and will be emailed to any pre-registered participants.

5)   There will be NO day of race registrations allowed for any distance

What hasn’t changed

6)   At packet pickup, all participants will receive their high-quality race shirt, with race bag and chipped bib. All finishers will receive their commemorative pint glass and finisher’s medal.

7)   There will still be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place overall awards, as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place age division awards.

The 1889 Johnstown Flood brought on change and 2021 brings the same for the Path of the Flood Historic Races!

Prepare yourselves for a whole new experience with two new trail extensions. For those who choose the 14 Mile distance, you will have the opportunity to “be the water” as you face the new trail and it’s steep initial eighty foot ascent – forcing your way up and over the top, breaching the “dam” and allowing your potential to shift into kinetic energy where you will roil and foam along this new 1.75 mile stretch. You will be able to see the town of South Fork from a whole new perspective before rejoining our previous course and continuing towards the finish.

All runners will have the opportunity to experience the new Trolley Line Extension from East Conemaugh to Woodvale Heights. This new trail allows us to get you off that long, exposed, mean stretch of road that ran from miles 10.5 to 12.0, but running in the shade doesn’t come without a price! This Trolley Line gives everyone an opportunity to take in a view of Johnstown that few ever see with a little climb before descending into The Heights of Woodvale and the continuing shade of Plum Street, passing through the Hope Tunnel and back onto the course for a strong push to the finish at Peoples Natural Gas Park, where you can see the historic Stone Bridge, still standing after stopping the majority of the flood’s energy.

Having to take current CDC and state guidelines into account, all three races will be capped at 250 participants so register early to avoid missing the race! As of right now, we are not planning for any post-race festivities at the park. We have contingency plans in the event that the world is a different place by spring of 2021. We will still provide the best race swag and will do our utmost to ensure this is the best running of the POTFHR ever! As we are always looking to improve upon your experience each year, all three distances will now have timing mats with chip timing.

This event is hosted by the Johnstown Area Heritage Association and the Cambria County Conservation & Recreation Authority – all proceeds benefit the Cambria County Trails and the heritage of the Johnstown region.

Registration is free for youth 17 years of age & under for all three races, thanks to 1889 Foundation.
